Two
Giants Of The Trucking Industry Meet In Colorado!!
Kind of like the Union Pacific Railroad and the Central Pacific meeting
at Promontory Point or an Eisenhower-Khrushchev summit meeting. The
HIghwayman and Cousin Jim met near Denver and spent the afternoon
together telling tall tales of life on the road. Basketball games,
gossip, lunch and a few cold ones were also the order of the day. I am
sure they both shared some bizarre and possibly truthful stories of
trucking the Great American Highway. (Is Candy cane there? or Large Marj?
from Pee Wee's Great Adventure, an RT favorite although he had trouble
following the intricate plot) Jimmy said it was great seeing family
members without going to a funeral. Fortunately Randy caught Jim in a
rare slow time of his busy social calendar so Jim was able to host the
historical meeting of the minds. Sounds like they both had a great time
and Jimmy was quite the host.. Photo by Jim.
Lucille Petersen Passes Away......
Janet's Mother,
Lucille Petersen passed away Friday evening,
March 5th at 9:15 p.m. at the age of 95.
The service will be 1:00 at Peace Lutheran Church
in Glidden next Thursday, March 11th. Burial will follow the services
at the Glidden cemetery. Lunch to follow that.
Real sad news, our thoughts and prayers go out to Janet and her entire
family.
Did You Know?
Nicole, daughter of Tim and Kim, was chosen to go with the Roland-Story girls
basketball team as they went to State in Des Moines this week.
Nicole is a 9th grader. What a nice honor and Congrats to Nicole and
family!!
Kuemper
Wins!!
Carroll Kuemper has made it to state in high school boys basketball and
Who is that bald guy cutting down the nets? Why it is Tyler, who has
helped coach the Knight to state this year. Way to go Tyler!! The
Knights won 52-50 against Emmetsburg @ Fort Dodge. Photo by JJ.
50 Years Ago This Week.....
According to the Glidden Graphic: "This
week it mentions that Larry Tryon scored 60 points in two games to help
Glidden win twice over Scranton. Manning won the conference that year
(1960) with a record of 6-0. Glidden finished 5-2." (LT also set
the school scoring record against Lake City that year.)

May Not Be Able To Open This Up....
It is a wmv. file (windows) and some Macs and older computers may not be
able to recognize the file. If it asks, just open. I could have made it
smaller, but then it takes away from the effect. If you can, it is
BEAUTIFUL and has a great cowboy song with words to live by. My little
cowgirls just love it. They watch it over and over again. (sent by WW)

place, one question behind until the last round.
Tales
Of The Open Road.....
The Highwayman is in Nevada on his way to L.A. He was snowed in last
Monday in Iowa at The Boondocks on I-35. He ate a grilled tuna sandwich
and has been sick ever since. He sent the following picture of Battle
Mountain, Nevada. He will be back next week.
Deb Leaves Washington DC Just In Time!!
A note from Deb: "Hi, Gang. Just wanted
to share some pics of a fabulous trip to Washington DC. Last Sunday I
was able to spend 2.5 hours seeing many sites before I had to focus on
work. It was below freezing and there was a lot of snow but I was able
to walk five miles and see many things. Thankfully I was able to catch
the last flight out to Cleveland on Friday before this weekend's big
storm hit." Deb S. Looks like a great time, just click on pictures to

Incredibly Tough Quiz.....
So, Like what holiday is it today? February 3rd?....No, it is NOT Ground
Hog Day. Well, the faculty at Tryon University will explain it to you.
JUST CLICK HERE....Now, after viewing, do you think anyone?
teaches this stuff any more? If you are not sure, then check out this
story on Fox News.
CLICK HERE No more US History before 1877 to be taught in
schools?....Huh? No Founding Fathers? No Constitution? No Abe Lincoln
and the Civil War? and it is being replaced by MORE environment and
global studies?.......EDITORIAL ALERT....I cannot express in words,
the tragedy that is going on at colleges, high schools and even in lower
grades, The revisionist history that is replacing what used to be the
American Story ..(you cannot use the term Melting Pot anymore, I was
told, you are suppose to say it is a stew or a salad....huh?...Well, not
at Tryon U, where we cherish what BINDS us together, like love of family,
the joy of freedom
and a common language, not what divides us.....Yes, Virginia, there IS
an American Culture. It is based on individual freedom and private
ownership. Well, at least it used to be.)....This revisionism has been
going on for decades, led by the text books....No Thomas Edison, No
Henry Ford, No US Grants, but lots about people that are politically
correct...like...Emma Goldman (anarchist)...Sacco and Vanzetti (murderers
and armed robbers) Che and Fidel , (Communist thugs).....Earl Warren's
Court.....How we spent (it ain't true) our way out of The Great Depression,
.Woodrow (the racist) Wilson etc...(Man, do they love the KKK stuff, but
no Charles Lindbergh)....So depressing.....I am not sure any
subject has changed more since you were in school, than US History. I
know, I spent 36 years fighting it.
A
Tryon University Tradition
Old habits are hard to break. Once again I made a slide show Remembering
Those Who Passed In 2009. I always thought it was a great way to link
the past with the present and it was a great way to start some
interesting classroom discussions. So, How many of these people do you
remember? It flashes back some great memories and great times for me.
Quite a few of these people had a significant influence on my life. How

Camden
Is Fan Of The Game!!
January 22, at the Energy Pro Basketball game, Camden (Julie's) was named Fan Of The
Game. The boys were there as Cole's team attended a clinic before
the game. (Cole made a free throw at the big basket!) Ok, maybe it is just
me, but looking at the empty seats, maybe the odds were pretty good for
Camden to be chosen?, but Congrats anyway!!

Poor Jerry!! A lot of Carroll County has been without power since this
week's ice storm hit. Poor Jerry has NO television, No Heat and No
Internet.....Plus, No Jerilyn as she is up in Sioux Falls babysitting.
Tyler and family have also been without, but just off and on. Last
night, all of Carroll was out. No news on Glidden. This is not suppose
to be fixed until Monday, so Poor Jerry might miss the NFL Championship
games?!!
Wendy's
Brother Is In Haiti And YOU Can Help!!
I got the following from Wendy
(Todd's):
"www.leesdreamforhaiti.comIt's a site for helping my brother
(Lee, pictured) who lives in Haiti and has
survived the earthquake but has lost his home in the disaster and is
enduring many of the hardships. We've set up this site to help get
him and his community first-hand assistance. Their main need right
now is for food and clean drinking water, which is difficult to find
because the markets in Jacmel and Port-au-Prince are destroyed and
due to people fleeing Port-au-Prince and arriving in his community
of Mizak, their supplies are running low. Donating to Red Cross and
World Food Program also is the quickest way to get necessary foods
and bottled water to the people. The entire story is on that site
and we've also put it up Lee's story on www.tryongym.com so feel free to pull
any information you'd like from that.
I
appreciate any support given to my brother, whether financial,
prayer support, or just passing the word on to others who are
looking to make a difference......Thanks," Wendy
Please check these sites out and pray for all of
those trying to make a difference in Haiti and please donate if you can.
Believe
It Or Not..... Randy was fined $364 for LITTERING on his last haul to Los Angeles!!
He was driving through the desert of Northern New Mexico, when a fellow
trucker got him on the CB and said he had a flat tire on his rig. So RT
got out and sure enough, he had a blow out. He put on his flashers and
was driving to an exit, when a New Mexico patrolman (pictured) pulled
him over. NM has a law that says the trucker cannot drive down the road
with flashers on, he must park it and have assistance come to him. Well,
RT did not know this as he was just looking for a safe place to pull
over.
The cop then escorted RT's truck off the interstate, which Randy was
doing anyway and then wrote him a $364 ticket for LITTERING. Huh?
It was for leaving pieces of his tire on the road. (rubber) Geeze,
is New Mexico that hard up for tax money? (New Mexico IS a Democratic
run blue state). Was the Highwayman suppose to pull over and then walk
down the interstate picking up pieces he left for miles? How did Mr.
Policeman know RT's tire left pieces on the highway? and if there were
pieces, how did the cop
know that it was from RT's truck? Hey, where's a lawyer? When The Highwayman
protested the fine, Buford T. Justice responded, "Well, you're not the
first one to get this ticket." (Really? Did the money end up in the
policeman's pocket?)
Don't worry, though, Windstar
will pay for the ticket. Way to stick it to out-of-staters New
Mexico (Land Of Enchantment) or was this all a fairy tale?.........Believe It Or Not

In stunning move, Cauthen is ousted as city manager
By LYNN HORSLEY and MICHAEL MANSUR
Two years ago, Mayor Mark Funkhouser of Kansas City tried to
remove Wayne Cauthen as city manager.
On Thursday, he finally succeeded in a move that passed
the City Council by just one vote and that took City Hall
completely by surprise.
Cauthen, who was manager for more than six years, was
escorted from the building by the security chief.

Cousin
Ron Is Named To Hall Of Fame!! Ron's football officiating career hit a high point when he received
the super news and he also shares the following stories::
"I received a letter from Rick Wulkow recently. I
was humbled and honored as I read that I would be inducted into the Hall
of Fame during the half-time ceremonies of the Boys 2A Basketball
Tourney in Des Moines on March 12. I began writing a history of my
officiating. I worked over 520 games for over 156 high school districts
spanning a time from 1967 to 2009. One game in 1980 was between Coon
Rapids at Bayard and it rained so much we had to re chalk the goal lines
before we could play the game. We toweled off in the home-ec room and
used the sinks (no showers) and the football coach made us hotdogs and
chilli; for that we were paid $27.50 apiece. In 1990 it rained 4 inches
on a Thursday followed by 7 inches of snow Friday night and early
Saturday. Augustana College was more interested in getting the game
played than tearing up the field. When we arrived, the field was covered
with snow. They buried a tractor trying to blade the snow off the field.
In a brilliant move by a grounds-keeper, they decided to use orange
spray cans and sprayed the lines on top of the snow every 10 yards. The
game was played, the statistic-keepers went crazy, the field was torn up
beyond recognition and lots of our clothing was destroyed in the Mud
Bowl of 1990. Official "T" Congrats Ron On The Well Deserved News!!
Unbelievable!! Missed Extra Point
by Alabama Determines Winner of Bowl Bonanza!! In the closest
contest ever, that meaningless Extra Point kick with 33 seconds left in
the game was the difference in the 2009 Bowl Bonanza. If Alabama makes
it, Bryce Wins.....Wow, it hits the upright and lucky Dick and Alexis
tie for first place. Bryce and Tytan tie for third and Eric finishes in
5th as he picked the exact points scored. So DICK KNOWS FOOTBALL.....and
who finished dead last? Why it is Lucky Dale. (Mr. ISU) Big Cy did win
the Fantasy Football College Contest, though. (DBT was second)
Wow, it was a great contest. Now start studying for the NCAAs....

GREAT TIME At
The
Tryon Christmas!!
Over a week ago, almost
60 Tryons showed up to
celebrate family, fun
and Christmas in
Glidden. Special thanks
to Maxine for lining up
the church. Santa
arrived and was SUPER as
he led a Limbo contest
with the kids. The food
was scrumptious as
always and they even got
Travis to eat his first
prune cake. Isn't it
great to see someone
finally reach manhood?
Melody won the limbo
contest and was really
thrilled with her prize!
(a goofy hat) Chad and
Emily made their BIG
announcement as Donna
and Bruce grinned in the
background! Randy
brought his truck and
gave a BIG RIG ride for
the kids. All the little
ones jammed into the cab
(including Tyler) and an
exciting trip around
Glidden was enjoyed by
all. Rumor has it that a
WET DIAPER was left in
the cab and RT did not
notice it for over a
week!! DBT's antique,
digital camera blacked
out about half way thru
the day, but with the
help of a few others, HERE IS A SHORT SLIDE
SHOW. It sure
was a great time. Thanks
to all for making it so
memorable.
Congratulations
To Emily And Chad!!
One of the great moments
of last week's Tryon
Christmas was the
announcement of Chad and
Emily and their little
bundle of joy that is
expected in May. Great
News and very best
wishes to Chad and Em.
This will be their first
and another grandchild
for Donna and Bruce!!

Email Stinks!!
Thanks Mediacom. Last
week they announced a
FREE upgrade to their
email services will lots
of FREE additions to
making email more
exciting and smoother.
Well, as you have
probably read or heard,
it is a BIG MESS. I just
finished my daily phone
call to them and they
are working REALLY hard
to fix what they messed
up. There is a HUGE
delay when I send
anything and many ISPs
are blocking emails from
Mediacom because of
spam. It appears that I
can receive email,
unless from another
Mediacom subscriber like
Dale or GT. They told me
some emails will be

TRYON
CHRISTMAS IS SUNDAY!!
The annual Tryon
Christmas is Sunday,
December 6th, in Glidden
at the Methodist Church.
Maxine was kind enough
to get the church's
permission. With the
Fourth of July
celebration cancelled
last summer, we sure
hope as many as possible
make a big effort to
attend. It is one of the
few chances we have of
visiting with each
other.
The meal will be
served at 1:00 pm, so
try to get there around
12:30. Bring a hot and
cold dish, your own
utensils and your own
drink.
Bring a gift for
your kids, if you wish.
some will and some will
choose not to.
Santa will be there.
(gag gifts are always
encouraged) There will
be games and some crafts
for the kids, thanks to
the nieces. Come join
us. It is hard to get
together through out the
year, but it is so much
fun to visit and to see
the kids growing up. It
is always great to go
home for the Holidays.
Hope to see you there!!!
ALL ARE WELCOME!!

The Giving Tree!
Recently I received
the following
message from Jan:
"As you may know,
each year Blank
Children's Hospital
sponsors a Festival
of Trees & Lights in
Des Moines during
the week of
Thanksgiving. For
the first time this
year "The Giving
Tree" will be part
of the Festival.
This tree is a
project of the Iowa
Lions Eye Bank and
will honor eye
donors of 2008. The
Giving Tree is to be
decorated with
hundreds of handmade
porcelain
ornaments. Each
ornament will be
personalized with an
engraved plate
identifying the name
of a donor. I
thought you might
like to know there
will be an ornament
on this tree to
honor Larry (corneas
were donated). This
year's festival will
be held November
25-29 at the Polk
County Convention
Complex in Des
Moines. More
information about
the festival can be found at

Coon
Boys Score BIG!!
Randy, Tanner and
Tanner's other brother
Tanner (eh, Travis) went
raccoon hunting on the
Defiance farms this past
weekend. They nailed
five, four on the
Crawford farm. When they
took the furs to a
furrier in Maple River,
they were told about a
BIG COON contest
that they have run for
the past ten years. So
the boys entered two and
guess what? They are now
in FIRST AND SECOND
place!! Their Big Coon
was just a pound or so
from the ALL TIME
STATE RECORD!! It
checked in at an
enormous 31+ pounds!!
(Pure Iowa corn fed!)
The contest people have
never had an entry over
26 pounds in ten years!!
Wow, the monsters were
found under the porch of
that old fallen down
house. First place prize
is $100. The gang has
collected for the furs.
Their pheasant hunting
adventure near Jefferson
the weekend before was
not so productive. It
was the end of the line
for some clay
pigeons......Believe It

Believe It Or Not!!
Zach, (Tim's), has
started every game for
the Roland-Story Junior
High football team at
Defensive Back and Kick
Returner. The last game
of the season, the
starting running back
was sick, so Zach played
offense for the first
time. He scored 3
touchdowns! as R-S
finished off a fine
season. Way to go Zach!!
Wow!!
Congrats To Todd And GO
STORM!!
The Indoor
Football League (IFL)
has officially
approved the
transfer of
ownership of the
Sioux Falls Storm
from KT, LLC to
Tytan Enterprises,
LLC. Sioux Falls
businessman Todd
Tryon has purchased
the Sioux Falls
Storm.
Tryon will act as
CEO, President and
General Manager for
the team. "The Sioux
Falls Storm is one
of the most prized
organizations in our
league, and we are
very excited about
Tryon's fresh
ownership continuing
on the teams past
success and taking
the Storm to a whole
new level", stated
FL commissioner
Tommy Benizio. Tryon
brings credibility
to the Storm with
his experience as a
successful
businessman in the
Sioux Falls area. In
2003 he opened Tryon
Gym, the first
24-hour gym in Sioux
Falls. Tryon Gym,
Inc. has grown into
9-locations.
"This is the most
successful franchise
in indoor football
history," said
Tryon. "I'm excited
to have the
opportunity to build
on that legacy."
Todd originally
joined the
organization as a
member of the Sioux
Falls Cobras of the
IFL in the 2000
season. He ended his
career with the
Storm in 2004. Tryon
stayed on as a Wide
Receiver coach for
the 2005 through
2008 seasons. Tryon
Gym, Inc. has been a
long running partner
of the Sioux Falls
Storm.The Storm will
play 14 regular
season games in
2010. Sioux Falls

sure Todd's
expertise at running
his Tryon Fantasy
Football Team has
prepared him for
great success in
this new endeavor.

The 2009 Iowa Football
Playoffs begin tonight
and we have 3 Tryons
participating. Eric's
Van Meter Bulldogs play
Bedford. Brett's
(Offensive Coach) ADM
team plays at Le Mars

as they play a tough New
Hampton team. Max is
a QB and led his 9th
graders to an
outstanding season.
Congrats to all!! The
G-R Wildcats also play @
Stanton.
Christmas Is Set For
Sunday, December 6th!!
Maxine was nice enough
to reserve the church in
Glidden for the annual
Tryon Christmas
Celebration. As always,
there was talk about
changing the date, but
it is so hard to find a
good one. So mark your
calendars and try to
make a big effort to
join us. It seems to get
harder and harder to get
together as the years go
by.......More details to
follow....
Kansas
Super Scramble!!
Last weekend, the BIG
FOUR golfers of RT, JJ,
Tyler and DBT drove all
night to Lawrence,
Kansas to play in Rick
Weaver's Baker
University Super
Scramble Golf
Tournament. Over 240
golfers battled the
elements in their
attempt for eternal.
glory. One golfer won a
$1000 with a hole in
one. The weatherman
predicted a high of 53
degrees, but he kind of
goofed. It never got
above 41....Just missed
his forecast. The wind
chill was in the mid
thirties and lower at
times. Needless to say
the White Buffalo (JJ)
Posse MANNED UP
and actually won a few
prizes and finished
below par. The team
colors this year was a
big improvement over
last year's pink shirts.
The Posse wore black
Iowa Hawkeye sweatshirts
in honor of their
undefeated football
season and victory over
Michigan.. ISU clothes
were ready in case the
CLONES defeated the
Kansas Jayhawks, which
they almost did. It was
fun, but cold. Jerry
(huddled most of the
time in the golf
cart with his blankie)
never did recover after
a huge symbol was
blasted during his back
swing. (JJ also
threw a gooey, half
eaten hot dog at our
opponents! Nice heh?) DBT vows
next year to eat a
Polish sausage for each
hole we birdie. A big thanks to
Coach Weaver for his
great hospitality.

Tryons
@ The Iowa State Fair!! I got the
following email from
Doug:
Guess who we spotted
while sitting at the
Bill Riley stage at the
State Fair on Thursday?
It was Gaylord, Suzie,
and her two girls!
I've attached a photo.
The Team Tryon T-Shirts
gave them away.
Sure was great to see
Suzie --- been a few
years. Also, that
evening as we were
finding our seats for
the Jeremy Camp/Steven
Curtis Chapman concert
at the Grandstand,
Cousin Ron (Official
"T") spied us and came
over to say hello.
He was there working
security for the event.
It's always fun to see
family at the fair!

What
A GREAT Idea!!
This Thursday is the
11th Annual Glidden
Booster Club Golf Outing
at the Coon Rapids golf
course.
Information. It
is a major fund raiser
for Glidden athletics.
It is part of the
Glidden Alumni
celebration that is
Friday night. Well,
Jerry came up with a
great idea and has
created a Glidden
Wildcat golf towel that
will be given out to all
of the golfers. Over 75
are expected. Pictured
is the art work and the
towel itself. The great
idea is the towels are
being given out
compliments of the
Tryon family. We had 10
kids (I would not say
students) graduate from
GHS and I think we all
owe the school and the
community quite a bit.
Both have been major
forces in our lives. JJ
should have some of the
towels left over, so
contact him if you would
like one. I think they
are almost too nice for
the golf bag and look
great on the wall. Click Here To Contact JJ.
No guarantee how many
will be left over. Nice
job, Jerry!!
Jenna
And Brett's BIG DAY!!
A beautiful day and a
very beautiful wedding.
Congrats to Jenna, Brett
and their parents.
Everyone had a wonderful
time as it was a joyous
occasion and great fun
seeing family and
friends. We all wish the
happy couple the best.
They are currently
celebrating in Jamaica.
It was great seeing so
many that could make it
and

TEAM
TRYON Rocks!!
Actually, both Team
Tryons covered
themselves with glory
(and other stuff) at the
Coon Rapids 4 Person
Best Ball Golf
Tournament this past
Sunday. Team One,
consisting of Dick,
Randy, Bill (retired
Nevada teacher) and an
old farmer from Coon who
looked a lot like
"Junior" from Hee Haw
(we picked up 10 minutes
before we teed off,
complete with big
overalls. He was sitting
at the bar, drinking at
8:45 a.m.) The BEST
Tryon Team shot a
BLAZING 10 under par 60
and finished in Fourth
Place in the
Championship Flight!!
Only three shots from
winning the entire
tournament! Tryon Team
Two, consisting of
Jerry, Tyler, Keith
Chapman (old Glidden
coach) and a friend of
Tyler, who hit booming
drives, shot 9 under par
and finished in 5th
place over all. So
two TRYON teams
finished in the top
five, Wow!! But that
is only the beginning of
the fun and
excitement......... Wild
Red Bull Randy Ended Up
In The Lake!! Yes,
in the lake!! In the
middle of the
tournament, after
hitting our tee shots,
our column of golf carts
took off and headed down
the fairway. While
picking up our drives,
we noticed there was NO
Randy. He, and his golf
cart, were back IN THE
LAKE making a noise that
sounded like a pregnant
duck. His golf clubs
were under water and RT
was waist deep in the
dirtiest, scummiest
water I have ever seen!!
(and I was a farm boy)
It was quite a site!! My
teacher friend Bill
said, "Well, You don't
see that every day!" and
he was right. The group
behind us was there too
and RT was trying to
push the cart out of the
water, with no luck. He
had taken his shoes off
and stepped into ankle
deep water, but then
stepped into a hole and
ended up NECK DEEP
in the type of water you
see in pictures of
Somalia. Complete with
algae, flies, frogs and
oily goo. We at first
thought he had gone in
looking for cheap golf
balls, but no, the
entire golf cart was in
the pond and starting to
sink. Luckily, the group
behind us had a tow rope
and they towed the cart
out with Randy standing
in the lake, pushing
from behind. Needless to
say, RT was totally
soaked and stayed that
way the rest of the
tournament. He would
slosh around the greens
and was dragging moss
from his cart the rest
of the day. He seemed to
smell like one of those
Iowa cattle lots, but
maybe that was just the
wind from the Garst
farms. He looked like
the Creature From
The
Black Lagoon and I know
he went to church
afterward in Des Moines,
the poor guy. He tried
to blame the accident on
poor little Sam (Tammi's)
who was riding with him
and Sam never got wet at
all. The rest of the day
Randy was teased by
other golfers who
accused him of peeing
his pants, etc. RT
was not phased, however,
and helped lead the TOP
Tryon Team to VICTORY!!
We all had super fun,
the weather was
beautiful and the laughs
were plentiful. Another
great and memorable time
was had by all!! Anyone
looking for a used,
electric golf cart?
Lynn
Breaks His Leg!!
While playing for the
South Dakota state slow
pitch championship, Lynn
breaks his leg in two
places. Well, actually,
he did not break it.
Lynn was playing first
base and an IDIOT slid
into first in an attempt
to get on base and he
piled into Lynn's leg,
breaking the tibia and
fibula bones!! This
happened in the
Championship game, on
Sunday, in Pierre, South
Dakota. (Home of the
infamous BIG BOUNCE of
baseball card show
days). The TRYON GYM
team finished in second
place. Lynn rode an
ambulance back to Sioux
Falls. Lynn has now
qualified as a contender
for most broken bones
while playing softball
by an over-aged Tryon,
but he is a long way
from knocking Donnie
(AKA as the
World's Oldest
Shortstop.) off as the
all around champion. Tough Luck, Lynn.
Get well, soon.
Congrats To Sara!!
Sara gets her Masters
Degree in Family
Consumer Science, August
8th at Iowa State. Way
to go Sara!! We are very
proud of you!!
Ted
Edwards Is Rushed To The
Hospital!!
Ted Edwards, the Brother
in Law of Sally,
collapsed last night at
his home around 11:00
p.m. in Carroll. His
condition is very
serious. Ted was a long
time teacher and coach
at Carroll HS. Ted is a
great friend and
supporter of the Tryons
and our hearts and
prayers go to him and
his family.
Pictures From The
Densmore Reunion!!
A couple of weeks ago,
some of the Densmores
met in Guthrie Center
for a picnic. The
weather did not
cooperate, but they
found a great indoor
place to enjoy each
other's company. A great
time was had by all.

About
Apollo 11
When Neil
Armstrong and Buzz
Aldrin walked on the
moon 40 years ago, it
was a huge technological
feat. Here are a few fun
(and little-known) facts
about the mission:
The computers on the
mission had less
processing power
than a cellphone
does today.
Neil Armstrong's
"one small step" was
actually a 3.5 foot
jump to the lunar
surface.
Planting the
American flag (made
by Sears, by the
way, which got no
product placement
credit at the time)
was a difficult
task. The moon's
surface is rock
covered by a thin
layer of dust. So
Aldrin and Armstrong
had to jam the
flagpole in as far
as they could for
the pictures.
Janet
Wins Golf Championship!!
Janet won the Homewood
League Women's Golf
Championship this past
week, by firing a
wonderful 81 !! This is
the second time that she
has won this tournament,
the other time was a
couple of years ago. I
guess all that "advice"
from Coach Dale is
really paying off!!
Congrats to Janet, Woo
Woo!!
Where
Were You?
July 20th, 1969, when
Man first walked on the
moon? I was at the Lake
cabin of Merle and
Jeannette Stevens,
waterskiing. Yes they
had BIG MOTORS in
those days. I know Mom
and Dad were there and I
assume Randy and Nancy
were too. I was 19 and
just returned from my
"Tour" of the Far East.
Bruce and Donna were
there, entertaining, and
we would go in and out
of the cabin waiting for
the big moment on TV and
were guessing what the
first words would be. I
remember it seemed to
take forever and the TV
pictures were not very
good. The camera
appeared to be mounted
on the ladder and you
could kind of see the
boots. It took a TV
anchorman to tell you
when it actually
happened. This was the
greatest achievement of
the 20th century and
probably greatest in the
history of mankind. Do
you know what the
greatest achievement of
the 19th century was? A
hint: it happened almost
exactly 100 years before
the moon landing, July
of 1869.
Answer. Now for all of you
conspiracy people who
believe that it is all
fake. Did you know that
with these super
telescopes today, you
can actually see part of
the landing craft and
other debris left behind
on the moon? End of
argument, unless you are
Whoopi Goldberg or a
member of the Grassy
Knoll Society.....Reply
from Donna:
"Thanks for the great
memories--of July 1969!
We had just returned
from our 3 years in
Germany!!!! We were all
pretty happy! I had just
signed on to work at the
bank in Storm Lake-and
Bruce was signed up to
return to BV!! There was
a small, portable TV at
the cabin, black and
white!-but we didn't
care! We were excited to
watch those first steps
on the moon! We were
driving a very old
maroon rambler
convertible, that we
brought over the ocean!"
Great
News!!

a full time teacher in

at Guthrie Center Park, Sunday July 12 around noon. Bring covered dish &
whatever else you'd like.
Denny & Pat will help with the hamburger.

Doug
Receives Fantastic Award!!
Last week, Doug was awarded the VERY prestigious Fred W. Gottschalk Memorial
Award. Doug, Jodie and Melody flew out to Idaho to take part in the
presentation. CLICK HERE to
read about the award's history. The 2009 Fred W. Gottschalk Memorial
award is from the Forest Products Society (of which Doug has been a member since
1978). "The Gottschalk Award has a long and hallowed history dating back to
1966. The purpose of the award is to bestow the Society's highest recognition
on an individual who has served the Society with distinction and dedication."
WOW!! Doug also was awarded the membership rank of "Fellow" by the Society of
Wood Science and Technology (of which he has been a member since 1980). To top
it all off, a colleague from the University of Maine completely surprised Doug
and Jodie by paying their entire (and expensive) hotel bill for the week!! Way
To Go Doug!!. (Now we all know this is just a front to hide his REAL occupation
of working covertly for the shadow government. Every see 24?) Pictures are of
Doug and Melody at a place every REAL football fan should know. (Melody is
STUNNED when she hears that her Dad was honored in such a big way!!) CLICK HERE for the main web site.
